Ideal Weight Calculator: Find Your Perfect Healthy Weight
Calculate your ideal weight using four proven scientific formulas (Robinson, Miller, Devine, Hamwi) with personalized adjustments for body frame size and age.
Understanding Ideal Weight Calculations
Determining your ideal weight is more complex than simply looking at height-weight charts. Our comprehensive calculator uses four scientifically-validated formulas to provide you with a personalized ideal weight range that considers your unique characteristics.
The Four Scientific Formulas
Robinson Formula (1983)
Men: 52 kg + 1.9 kg per inch over 5 feet
Women: 49 kg + 1.7 kg per inch over 5 feet
The most recent and widely accepted formula, developed through extensive population studies. Considered highly accurate for modern populations.
Miller Formula (1983)
Men: 56.2 kg + 1.41 kg per inch over 5 feet
Women: 53.1 kg + 1.36 kg per inch over 5 feet
Developed alongside Robinson's work, this formula tends to give slightly higher weights and is excellent for individuals with medium to large frames.
Devine Formula (1974)
Men: 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet
Women: 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet
Widely used in medical and pharmaceutical settings for dosage calculations. Provides conservative estimates that work well for clinical applications.
Hamwi Formula (1964)
Men: 48 kg + 2.7 kg per inch over 5 feet
Women: 45.5 kg + 2.2 kg per inch over 5 feet
The original ideal weight formula, still used in many clinical settings. Provides a good baseline, especially for individuals with smaller frames.
Personalization Factors
Our calculator goes beyond basic formulas by incorporating several important factors:
- Body Frame Size: Small frames receive a 10% reduction, large frames get a 10% increase to account for bone structure differences.
- Age Adjustments: Research shows slightly higher weights may be healthier for older adults, so we add 2% for ages 50-65 and 5% for 65+.
- Gender Specificity: All formulas use different calculations for men and women to account for physiological differences.
Understanding Your Results
Your results will show individual calculations from each formula, plus an adjusted average that considers your frame size and age. We also provide the healthy BMI weight range for comparison.
Important Note: Ideal weight calculations are guidelines, not absolute targets. Factors like muscle mass, bone density, and overall health are more important than hitting a specific number on the scale.
Practical Applications
Use your ideal weight calculation as a reference point for:
- Setting realistic weight management goals
- Assessing whether current weight is within a healthy range
- Planning nutrition and exercise programs
- Monitoring long-term health trends
Remember that ideal weight is just one aspect of health. Focus on maintaining a balanced diet, regular physical activity, and overall wellness rather than obsessing over a specific number.
